Be careful what you wish for. Zayn is a locomotive for the Candy Floss Central rail line. He has a secret dream: to be an express train. Wouldn’t that be grand! He would be able to ride the rails at breakneck speed. Mincemeat is a human-sized ginger cat who loves to sew, bake, and even ride a motorbike. He lives with Great-Grandma in the village of Howdoyoudo. They plan on taking a train ride to visit Aunt Petunia. Mincemeat, ever thoughtful, makes a last-minute decision to hop off the train at the Lilac Hill station to purchase some lilacs for Great-Grandma. The train almost leaves without him and his dream of bringing Great-Grandma a bouquet of lilacs is almost ruined. Then Zayn’s dream takes over as the two have a thrilling ride to their final destination.

Lois Davis’s story, Mincemeat and the Incredible Train Ride: Mincemeat’s World of Adventures Book 1, is a charming train story much like the ever-popular Reverend Wilbert Awdry’s Thomas the Tank Engine series. The two main characters, Zayn the locomotive and Mincemeat the baking cat, will entice young readers to enjoy the adventures and journey along the rails from Muddlewich Station (so called because everything is in a muddle, including the ticket office which requires passengers to climb a ladder to the roof of the station to get their tickets) to Lilac Hill, Duckling Down, Hamster Heights, Marshmallow Ridge and many other uniquely named stations until the final destination. The train ride is indeed an adventure, full of fun and laughter that a young reader will certainly enjoy. The illustrations are bright and colorful. Overall, a charming, fun story.
