Miss Woodhouse and Miss Fairfax by Maisie Jardelle is an absolutely delightful Regency romance, but with a fascinating twist. Jane Fairfax was a beautiful young woman whose family had fallen upon difficult financial times. Her nemesis, Emma Woodhouse, is by Regency standards, a rising young star destined to marry well. Emma has always been jealous of Jane’s beauty and accomplishments in art and music. However, coming from a wealthy and successful family, Emma possesses everything to succeed in Regency Britain. Jane's options, however, are severely limited. Unless she can marry well, her only path to respectability could be as a governess to other families’ children. When Emma is pushed into doing a favor for Jane, she discovers that she and Jane could indeed be friends and that she had mistaken Jane’s shyness for aloofness and reserve. As the two young women explore their developing friendship, they are both aware that there are deeper, more compelling feelings lying just below the surface. Can they possibly act on this intense attraction to each other? What would be the consequences if they were ever discovered?

Miss Woodhouse and Miss Fairfax is a beautiful romance that will tug at the heartstrings of readers. I am a big fan of Regency romances, but a sapphic element gives this an added attraction. Maisie Jardelle does an extraordinary job of developing Emma and Jane, and readers will quickly be drawn into their highly secret and intimate world. The romantic scenes are so powerfully written and so relatable that they achieve the rare distinction of being erotic, without veering into crudity. What makes this story so compelling is the sense of danger in their relationship. Living in a rural village meant that both were always at the mercy of the local gossipmongers, and any hint of a scandal would have catastrophic effects for both them and their families. This is a fantastic read that will appeal to all lovers of Regency romances because it gives a slightly different slant on that extremely fascinating and unusual period of British history. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend it.
