In “Mistress of My Fate” we meet Henrietta Ingerton Lightfoot. Miss Lightfoot was raised as the poor cousin in her uncle’s home. It was the home of a well to do, noble family. Miss Lightfoot had not a dowry and knew she had little hope of a fine marriage; the best she could hope for was to end up living with her spoiled cousin, Catherine, and serving as a lady in waiting. Henrietta met handsome Lord Allenham at Catherine’s coming-out. Allenham and Henrietta fell in love but he needed a wife that came with a dowry. He planned to marry Catherine and to have Henrietta live with them, thus having his cake and eating it too. A series of events took place causing Henrietta to flee the Stavourley home to avoid a forced marriage. She sought refuge in the arms and home of Allenham. When Henrietta discovered her parentage she sought her mother but unfortunately the Courtesan had died quite some time before. Henrietta had hard decisions to make knowing she was carrying Allenham’s child.
“Mistress of My Fate” is written in the first person. I felt as if I was holding a conversation with Henrietta and she was sharing her story with me. Hallie Rubenhold is a historian; she utilizes her vast knowledge of British society in the 1700s to make this book true to the time period. Henrietta wanted to control her own fate which was unheard of during that period. I found this book enlightening, entertaining and fascinating. This is the first book in a trilogy. I eagerly await the next installment.
