Mom, Dad and Everyone Else by David Dickerman is a story for children that has a good concept and introduces kids to divorce. The little boy in the story is happy with his father and mother until one day when they tell him that they are divorcing. They tell him that its no fault of his, but still he keeps thinking what he might have done for his father to leave home and stay somewhere else. The boy's mother buys him a pet dog so he does not feel that lonely. One day, when he goes to his father's house, he meets his step-mother and step-brother. His mother also remarries and he has a step-sister. The author handles the topic of divorce and remarriage very well through this simple story.
The author does a good job in handling a sensitive topic in a very positive way. The bright and colorful illustrations are helpful to kids as they breathe life into the characters and story. The book makes a good bedtime read and parents and grandparents can read it out at night to their kids and grand kids. It can also be used for read aloud sessions in school libraries and classrooms. I recommend this book to all families who have gone through divorce and have given their kids new families. The book shows how the new family members can blend well into the lives of the kids. The book looks at divorce with a positive approach and it can be useful to kids handling the separation and divorce of their parents.
