Mommy’s Boy by Jennifer Huston Schaeffer is a memoir that chronicles the author’s touching journey with her beloved dog, Benny. When Jennifer first met Benny, she knew they were meant for each other. His excitement was evident, and it was as if he understood that she would be his mommy. However, Jennifer felt that her little family was not complete; she desired love and a family. Unfortunately, her attempts at dating did not lead to success, and her dream of having a baby ended in heartbreak. Throughout these challenges, Benny’s companionship remained steadfast and uplifting, giving Jennifer the courage to continue seeking love. Eventually, Jennifer meets Brad, a loving and understanding man who supports both her and Benny during their difficult times and becomes a cherished part of their family. Despite facing medical challenges, Benny brings immense joy and comfort to their lives, teaching them invaluable lessons about resilience.

Mommy’s Boy is one of the most moving stories I have ever read; it beautifully captures the bond between a pet and their owner. Life works in mysterious ways, and Jennifer Huston Schaeffer and Benny's story is a testament to how we can receive blessings from unexpected connections. Jennifer's prayer for companionship was miraculously answered in the form of Benny, and their journey includes emotional ups and downs that lead to profound love and personal growth. The book discusses Benny's medical struggles with bacterial and fungal infections, various surgeries, and his declining health. Jennifer vividly describes Benny's zest for life through these challenges, inspiring readers to cherish every moment with their loved ones, whether human or animal. The story contains humorous moments that balance the more emotional themes; it will make you smile and cry at the same time. I learned a great deal about veterinary care and the different ailments that pets can face. Overall, this is a heartfelt story about unconditional love, the importance of celebrating life, and the special relationships we build with our pets.

Time is precious. “What I have realized is that time slips through our fingers like grains of sand. Losing Benny has made me keenly aware of how precious life is – and it’s even more so for our beloved pets.” One doesn’t realize how precious it is until one falls for a four-legged furry friend and the time just flies past and then it’s over. Jennifer Huston Schaeffer’s Mommy’s Boy is a tribute to that special bond between humans and dogs. Boo/Benny is the author’s special fur baby. He comes into her life just when she’s just about given up on finding a soulmate and Boo/Benny is just what she needs. Full of unconditional love, companionship, and the emotional support she needs, the author asks the question of who rescued whom. She may have rescued Boo/Benny, but he also rescued her. Sadly, he wasn’t with her long enough – they never are.

Jennifer Huston Schaeffer’s book, Mommy’s Boy: How My Doggie Soulmate’s Love Rescued Me, is a tender, compassionate story, a memoir about the wonderful bond the author develops with a very special dog. The memoir is written like a novel, complete with engaging dialogue and descriptive narrative passages that vividly set the stage for the story. The language is subtle and relaxing and allows the reader to settle in for a good read. I love the photographs of Boo/Benny at the end of the book. They really capture this lovable little bundle of energy. This is a great read for dog lovers; tender and heart-wrenching, readers will both laugh and cry as the story progresses. I loved it!
