Monoland: Into the Gray Horizon by E.A. Minin is a supernatural novel with a very unique concept and a powerful hook. It is a story about the afterlife, but not the afterlife as a clearly defined place where souls enter after they take their last breath. It’s a place akin to the Christian concept of Purgatory, only one doesn’t atone for past sins in this place. What is most interesting is that this place, called Monoland, allows those who enter it to define their eternity. It’s in this gray zone that we encounter the hero, cut off from his past and thrust into a neutral, colorless world where he has to make choices that define the way his eternity will be spent.

E.A. Minin’s novel is very original in many aspects. First off, the concept behind the book is a unique and thought provoking one, touching on one of the issues that haunts the human mind. What really happens when we pass on? Here is an author who looks at humanity past mortality and seeks to define the purpose of life by looking at it past death. Second, the characters are very compelling and the reader is interested to learn what happens to them, keen on the choices they make and wondering where such choices would lead them. The writing is good and features great psychological and emotional depth. Although it is a novel about the afterlife, the reader can easily connect with the emotions of the characters. Told in the first person narrative, the reader is pulled into the world of the protagonist and experiences the emotions as though they were his or hers. Monoland: Into the Gray Horizon will entertain readers and provoke them to ask serious questions about life and death. I found it entertaining and beautifully conceived.
