Montooth 3 - Red Cross of Gold is the third book in the Montooth series by Robert Jay. It features most the characters from the first books, all of which were unfamiliar to this reader. Carty Anderson is a college-aged woman who had a friendship group called The Crew. They have previously been on several adventures which are alluded to in the first part of the book. The novel is set in the mid-1950s when Carty has been admitted to Purdue University. She has a reputation as an expert archer and when a controversial professor is found dead from wounds which appear consistent with wounds from an arrow, Carty becomes the main suspect. While Carty is fending off one charge after another, her former roommate Elena has gone to Cuba to join Castro's bid to overthrow the current Batista regime. Carty and her friends begin a plan to extricate Carty as a murder suspect while Elena uses her crafty skills to try to thwart the power of the dictator Batista.

Carty and her friends are lovable characters. Carty is strong and intelligent and a wonderful role model for the young adult readers for which the novel was intended. Montooth 3 delivers suspense and action and author Robert Jay creates characters that could go on indefinitely in subsequent stories. The bonus of the Montooth story of the Bears and the Bees was charming. There were a lot of subtle messages in the short story which resounded in the text of the two mysteries. Jay has done an admirable job of interweaving stories for the young adult mind.
