Ade is drowning. She’s a chemical engineering student who has too much on her plate. In addition to her studies, she’s keeping her identity secret after a scandal involving her father at her university. It’s a lot, and she really needs to sleep, which sounds easy, right? Except she’s stressed and she can’t focus, until she finds a study giving her the key to insomnia: Sex. More Than Chemical follows Ade as she and dorm playboy Dallas embark on a solution to her inability to sleep. The chemistry is off the charts, but they both have secrets, and Leanne Farella unpacks these layers slowly, giving the reader tidbits of details as these two grow closer, aside from their pre-sleep activities. But the thing is that Dallas also has secrets, and you know how well love affairs and secrets tend to mix.
More Than Chemical is a cute New Adult romance, and it reads like one. The characters are young and finding themselves, but they also think they have all the answers. It’s a perfect mix for this genre because they’re bound to make mistakes, and that adds the drama to push the story forward. Ade is a relatable character despite her studies and her family drama because she really is just a girl trying to figure out life. Dallas is the quintessential book boyfriend; he’s handsome and charming and thinks the world of our heroine. Leanne Farella has crafted an entertaining read with just enough drama and emotion so that the story doesn’t get bogged down and angst-ridden.
