“She’s feisty, fearless, and her weapon of choice is sex. Thousand-year-old succubus, Alexis Rayne is a hired killer with a long history of legal name changes, a severe drinking problem, and the ability to bring any man or woman to their knees. During a recent job, however, she screws up... there’s a witness, and now she’s forced to track the bastard down to tie up loose ends. During all this, her prime employer calls to offer her the job of a lifetime. The only problem is this job involves the vampire mafia. Bring it on! “If I really have to die, let it be by succubi!”
Mortal Blow by Eliza Hendrix is a kick-ass story written in the style of the great detective novels or, dare I say, Charles Bukowski? Hendrix has taken this familiar and popular writing style into the horror and erotic genre with apparent ease and - I’m certain - great success. Alexis is a fascinating character with all the required impairments that offset and sometimes contradict her talents and achievements. A succubus with human desires and failings… who’d have thunk it? Supporting roles are equally fascinating and fit perfectly into the storyline; from Drax, her reptilian humanoid “roommate,” to the sixteen-year-old novice witch and, at the end, the vampire Veerka, the story weaves and moves at a relaxing but ever enticing pace. I loved Mortal Blow, and I’m looking forward to the sequel. As written in the original synopsis: Mortal Blow combines cool magic, unapologetic ass-kicking, steaminess, and a whole lot of attitude. What more could anyone ask for? I can’t, and I’m hoping to read much more about Alexis, Drax, Rachel, and the “goddess” vampire, Veerka!
