Learning to stop wearing diapers is a significant event in every child's life. The process becomes easier if the child views it positively. Mouki and Her Special Day/El día especial de Mouki is a bilingual book that will teach children to see this change as something exciting. The story concerns a day in the life of a bird named Mouki. At first, it seems like a quiet day for her. She is encouraged to get up, have breakfast, and go to school. She is constantly reminded that it is a special day and given lots of encouragement to continue. It is later that the reader discovers what makes this particular day so unusual. Alex MacDonald shares a tale that every child will enjoy.
Alex MacDonald does an excellent job with this work. I loved her translations throughout the story. She always kept a pleasing rhythm in English and Spanish. She highlights keywords in both languages for readers to understand the translation and each of the ideas. The story has simple and colorful illustrations, perfect for catching the attention of young children. The narration maintains interest and intrigue and it is only near the end that the reader discovers what makes the day so wonderful. The tone is comforting because all the characters support Mouki on her big day. Mouki and Her Special Day/El día especial de Mouki is written with great attention to detail. The plot, although simple, is well developed, and children will want to know more and strive to be like Mouki. The book has tasks to make it more interactive.
