Movie! Movie! A Dog. Two Parrots. And A Festival is a children’s animal story book written by Scott Ferrell. Gaston, Little Gregorie and Birdie were the best of friends who loved their home with its flower garden and fruit-filled orchard. Gaston was a dog who loved spending time outdoors in the garden, chasing after brightly colored butterflies and helping his parrot friends, Little Gregorie and Birdie, find ripe peaches in the orchard. Peaches were Little Gregorie’s favorite. At night, they loved to watch movies, especially movies that were filled with color and music. They would all sit, eat popcorn, and stare transfixed at the moving images. Sometimes Little Gregorie and Birdie would accompany the scores with their own singing. Mr. Marceau, whose house they lived in, loved to see his animal companions having such a good time, and he decided to give them a special treat -- a Movie Festival! They would go to the annual Cannes Film Festival held in the south of France. Everyone was excited as they boarded the train that would take them there.
Scott Ferrell’s Movie! Movie! follows Mr. Marceau and his animal companions as they travel by train to the Cannes Film Festival. This is the eleventh book in Ferrell’s series, but he gives enough background information for it to be read on its own. I loved Ferrell’s story-telling style and could easily visualize those parrots dancing and repeating phrases as they watch their beloved movies. The illustrations are compelling and elegant in their simplicity. This is a grand selection for story time, and kids will love calling out Little Gregorie's and Birdie’s responses as they follow along with the story. Movie! Movie! A Dog. Two Parrots. And A Festival is most highly recommended.
