Mr. R: A Rock and Roll Romance is a work of fiction in the romance category. It is aimed at older readers and was penned by Tracy Neis. The story is a retelling of the classic novel Jane Eyre but through the lens of the rock and roll scene of the 1970s. The story follows both Eddie Rochester, a rock star who married the beautiful and passionate Roberta Mason without knowing what hid behind her eyes, and Jenny Ayr, a liberated soul who crosses paths with Eddie and rekindles his love of life and music. Will the secret he married into ruin his chance of true happiness with Jenny?
It is always a fun prospect for a reader to be given a book that retells a story they know well in an exciting and original way. Taking the classic narrative of Jane Eyre but spinning it into a twisting and turning saga about rock stars and the world they live in was a brilliant concept masterfully executed by Tracy Neis. I was astonished by how well the original text translated to the music scene of the 70s and 80s, helped along the way by the author's creative spins on the characters and themes.
Using Rochester’s perspective was an excellent touch, and in many ways, Mr. R creates a more complete and more compelling picture of the brooding love interest from the original. Similarly, the more fleshed-out vision of Roberta elevates this from a simple retelling to a marvelous companion to the original book. I would definitely recommend Mr. R: A Rock and Roll Romance to all readers.
