Joyce Lattimer is a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at a large Boston hospital. After seeing something out of the ordinary occur while caring for the sick infants, she becomes convinced that someone is deliberately causing harm to some of the babies and, in many instances, their deaths. After reporting her suspicions of the nurse she feels is responsible, the hospital board, for several reasons, refuses to believe that one of their own would kill children. They merely move Martha Ryan, an LPN, out of the NICU but allow her to work in Pediatrics. After friends with whom she confided are murdered, and she receives sinister phone calls from a man, Joyce begins to believe Martha knows the truth about what is happening and who committed the murders. Was it Martha, or an accomplice, or both? Joyce struggles to protect the hospital's helpless but is threatened, and friends, and even family, become targets. Somehow she knows she has to stop this now, before it’s too late.

This story has it all: drama, suspense, intrigue, and death. It is well written and even thought provoking. Could something like this really happen? The author has developed a strong character cast with good believable dialog. I did find the plot to be filled with a great amount of daily detail. In some instances, this caused the suspense to lessen slightly. I also felt the drama and suspense would have been heightened if the author included more detail about the murders of the protagonist’s friends which would have pulled the reader in even deeper. Overall, it's very well written and an excellent mystery.
