Murder on the Island: A Belinda Lawrence Mystery has all the elements of a great murder mystery story. The plot is a familiar one with its own twist; several people are visiting an out of the way mansion when a rain storm leaves them in the dark and without power. This is where the familiarity ends. Murder on the Island has all of its own suspense and excitement. Belinda is on the island of Guernsey, visiting her mother-in-law to be, and left alone when her fiancé, Mark, is called out of town on business.
Along with Belinda are her friend, Hazel, and several other people that Melba, Lady Sallinger has invited for various reasons – the priest, the interior decorator, the author writing a history book, and Belinda’s parents. Ms. Massey has been the caretaker of the mansion for many, many years and watches carefully over the guests. The mystery begins when the skeleton of a baby is found in the garden. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Massey is found murdered and the guests are unable to call the police because all of their cell phones have disappeared. Belinda is now in detective mode and she slowly uncovers the secrets that will lead to solving the crime.
I really enjoyed Murder on the Island and found it hard to put down. The surprise ending put everything into perfect place. Brian Kavanagh has created characters that complemented each other, were likeable and well defined. The plot was fast moving, entertaining and believable. I believe this would make a wonderful movie and can easily picture which actor and actress I would like to see portray each character. This is definitely a five star book and a must-read.
