Meet Murphy, an adorable special assistance dog in Murphy, See How You Shine, a story that celebrates the gifts within us by Chen Wei Teng. Murphy loves his strolls with Candy. He likes walking down the park connector with her. He hears the dry, croaking sounds of the birds and then he knows they are darting into the canal to get a drink. He hears bicycle bells ringing and he knows the joggers are out for their evening run. Murphy’s ears stiffen when he hears other dogs barking and playing together. Murphy wished to be like the other dogs but he is blind. His life changed when Candy took him home from the dog shelter. Murphy is scared that Candy will stop loving him. But Candy needs Murphy as much as Murphy needs her. Then one day something happens during their evening stroll that makes Murphy realize that his life has a purpose.
The story is heartwarming and will help children realize their purpose in life and to lead a fulfilling life. The illustrations by Quek Hong Shin are adorable and give a good pace and movement to the story. The concept is beautiful and the author handles it with elegance and finesse, and gives hope to many readers out there who are struggling with their disadvantages. This book is good for read aloud sessions in classrooms as children will be motivated by Murphy, who shows them they can make the world a better place with their uniqueness, just like him. Parents can use it for bedtime storytelling and help their children feel special and overcome their insecurities and drawbacks.
