Author Biography

Sonya Annita Song is a poet whose rhymes are loved by both adults and children. Her writing style for children is delightfully whimsical with a natural flow meant for reading out loud.

Sonya's goal as a children's author is to create engaging rhyming picture books that children and parents will have fun reading together. One of her favorite memories as a child is going to the local library in the summer and bringing back shopping bags full of books to read. Books were, and still are, passports to incredible destinations full of joy and wonder, and Sonya hopes all children will discover the marvels of reading just like she did.

My Baby Slime by Sonya Annita Song and Rohini Shrivastava is a rhyming picture book about learning to be assertive. We dive into this topic with some unexpected guides: a young boy and his adorable pet slime. The boy narrates the story of his adventures with his pet monster, adorable talking blue slime. Unfortunately, during their trips to school and the zoo, classmates and creatures decide they want to touch, toss, and sit upon the slime, much to his dismay. When the slime has had enough, his owner teaches the slime an important life skill - responding with a polite, firm “No!” to those who make him uncomfortable.

What a wonderful beginner’s guide to standing up for yourself by Sonya Annita Song! I did not expect a story with cute slime to also help children learn how to speak up when they are uncomfortable with physical contact. What I love most is that, just like our tiny monster friend, the content of the story is not scary. The only childhood conversations I recall about asserting yourself and saying “No” to unwanted touching were phrased seriously or scarily, which made me nervous to think about as a child. In contrast, we see the slime practice saying “No” to a goat invading his personal space and watching the slime experience peace after successfully setting his boundary.

On top of being a fantastic story, My Baby Slime’s illustrations are beautiful. We enjoy dynamic colors and detailed images. Best of all is the range of emotions we experience with the baby slime throughout his adventures! I believe the themes and reading level are perfect for beginner readers to enjoy on their own, or for grown-ups to read aloud during story time.
