My Beach Adventure: A Personal Childhood Story by David D Bernstein follows Dmitry, a six-year-old boy lost on a beach after following a sailboat moving west. Unable to locate his family, he becomes overwhelmed with fear and sadness. As he wanders, he encounters various strangers, including a woman who speaks Italian and a little girl who smiles at him. Surrounded by unfamiliar faces, Dmitry feels alone until he hears Russian, a language he understands. A kind man approaches him, takes his hand, and leads him to a small café where people translate questions for him. Dmitry struggles to respond, refusing food and drink, until he hears his name announced over a loudspeaker. His father appears with a smiling face. As the sun sets, the sailboat returns, and the day ends with a sense of comfort and reunion.

David D. Bernstein’s book My Beach Adventure is a simply written, heartwarming tale that captures the fear and wonder of a lost child in an unfamiliar place. Bernstein provides vividly written imagery to bring the setting to life. The sand glimmers like diamonds, the sky shifts with dark amber clouds, and a mysterious sailboat vanishes into the horizon. It's thoughtfully composed to create a sense of both urgency and magic as young Dmitry wades through a beach full of strangers, longing for the warmth of his family. As a parent, I felt Dmitry’s initial panic naturally, and together with my youngest reader, we understood the sheer relief when he was finally reunited with his father. This touching story does well in portraying the kindness of strangers, the power of language, and the comfort of a parent's embrace, making it a memorable and uplifting read. Recommended.
