My Black Cat by Susanne Collyer tells of the daily adventures of Susanne’s black cat. He likes to sit by the window and stare out all day, watching the birds on the ground or in the air. He sometimes likes to play outside in the snow and leave his paw prints behind. Sometimes the black cat’s paw prints make very pretty patterns. On some days, Susanne’s black cat likes to lie outdoors with the breeze blowing on him, while sharing his space with his cat friends.
The story of My Black Cat is interesting and will appeal to families with cats. I feel that giving the black cat a name would have made the cat seem more like a member of the family. I do like how Susanne has shown the different things that cats like to do and the places they like to sit which make them feel safe and secure. Children who grow up with pets tend to be happier and gain a gentleness which can only be taught to them by smaller animals. The layout of the book is perfect for those of a very young age group, with a full photo of the black cat’s activities on one page, and the opposite page containing large text which is easy to read.
