My Bug Buddy by Mimi Soes is the story of a beautiful little bug that lived in the pretty little garden of a pretty little home with a young and pretty mom. The garden was beautiful and one sunny day, the mom opened the living room window to let fresh air and a breeze into the home. A brownish-greenish scary looking bug-like creature came in with that wonderful breeze and it flew, twisting and twirling, through the room. The mom was afraid it would sting her. They were both scared and they both chased each other and the mom took it into the garden and left it in the bushes. The next day morning when she opened the window, a similar looking bug came in and sat on her arm. She was not sure if it was the old one she threw into the bushes or if it was a new one. But then she let it sit on her right arm and there were no stings and the same scene occurred for many days till the bug stopped coming.
The story is about friendship and the most important message is about judging something hastily without knowing exactly what it is. Here the mom thinks the bug will sting her, but it never did and they end up being friends. The illustrations are wonderful and they bring the story and the characters to life for young readers. The author knits in a relevant concept beautifully through the bug and the mom's interaction, making it easy for children to understand. It is a good story to read out in classrooms and school libraries as many times children and adults judge someone or something hastily, without actually knowing them or it. The story is a good eye-opener and will help prevent young readers being judgmental.
