My Mom Has No Fun, written by Becca Haney and illustrated by Toni Cole, is a rhyming picture book told from the point of view of a confident and secure child. He observes every moment his mom spends alone. Cleaning, napping, grocery shopping, and going for a run are absolutely boring. At least that's what our little narrator thinks. So, our young cape-wearing kiddo devises a brilliant solution to rescue his mom from her mundane world. He distinctly remembers the moments they were together. And, on all occasions, he noticed Mom's smile and her having fun. He generously offers his time and constant company as a remedy from sunrise until bedtime. It is a sweet and fun story with elements of parent-child daily activities.
Becca Haney has a quiet brilliance of writing for two audiences at once without ever losing either one. Children will be delighted to feel heroic and important through the rhythm that bounces along with the infectious energy of a kid. On the other hand, parents will read between the lines and find a gentle, knowing wink about the spot-on portrayal of their routine, and maybe it can spark some ideas to change things every once in a while. The pacing is perfectly matched to a read-aloud. The short and punchy lines are intentional. The age-appropriate words are easy to grasp, with a hint of playfulness in the words and the drawings. Toni Cole uses light lines and pastel colours that uplift the story with every turn of the page. My Mom Has No Fun is more than just a good bedtime story. It is like a little mirror disguised as a children's book showing a parent's and a child's expressions of love, making the everyday chaos feel like a gift.
