My Mommy is in Heaven is a children’s book by Dr. Shawna L. Della Cerra and Alexander R. Della Cerra. The story is about the journey of a young triceratops who has lost her mother. The story follows the little dinosaur through ordinary moments—doing laundry, playing with friends, attending school, getting ready for bed—while witnessing her navigate the complicated emotions that arise when missing her mother. The little dinosaur’s motivation is the memory of her mom and knowing what her mom would want for her. She also remembers that she will see her mom again in Heaven. The little dinosaur finds comfort in her relationship with her dad and copes by looking at pictures of her mom, hearing stories about her, and other fun ways. The Daddy dinosaur reassures her that they will be okay. He also reminds her to accept those big feelings and that it’s okay to share them with others. Through this lens, childhood grief is explored thoughtfully and gently.
This book brought me to tears. What makes this narrative special is how it gives hope. My Mommy is in Heaven shows that grief is not something to overcome, but is a journey to be lived with grace. Dr. Shawna L. Della Cerra and Alexander R. Della Cerra have created a tale that helps children understand their complex emotions through relatable dinosaur characters. Ryan Law's illustrations enhance this journey. Written in simple yet profound rhyming verses, the book presents sophisticated emotional concepts in child-friendly language. The various coping mechanisms depicted—looking at pictures, singing, praying, and seeking physical comfort from loved ones—provide practical examples for young readers. This book is an invaluable resource for families helping children process the loss of a mother or other loved one, offering both emotional validation and gentle guidance through the healing journey.
