My Safe Place by Brittney Brackett is an enchanting picture book that welcomes children into the positive world of affirmations. In a world where we all live in an uncertain environment, this picture book helps parents impart courage, love, and self-esteem to young children. The book features a boy and a girl, and we join them inside their thoughts as we read what they think and feel about a demanding and fast-changing world. They think hard about life—the good things and the bad things. But they also show us what they do in times when they are scared or when their heart aches. In a little prose delivered with poetic grace, they express their reactions by accentuating the positive, the things that they are thankful for, the miracle of music, and of the power of prayer that helps relieve them of anxiety.
My Safe Place has a pressing reminder that encouragement and support are great things, but it is also important to teach our children to create these feelings within themselves. On account of the cool illustrations and the easy-to-grasp metaphors that go with it, the book is a brilliant concept for kids to learn at an early age how to develop the proper emotional response to negative stimuli. By delivering positive affirmations that children can use to support themselves, Brittney Brackett's book can help them wire their brains in a positive direction and boost their confidence. No one is perfect, but the language that we expose to our children while they grow up significantly contributes to their well-being. Brackett writes positively, sincerely, and affectionately. This book is a must-read for kids.
