Fantasy books have to be pretty good to hold my attention, and I have to say, My Sparkling Misfortune: Book One of The Lakeland Knight Series, is just such a book. From the very first sentence to the last page, this short book held my attention.

This is the story of Lord Arkus, villain of Blackriver Castle, who had spent most of his life scheming and plotting, invading, kidnapping and collecting ransoms along with other dastardly deeds. When he met up with the beast that had tried to get to him for so long, he fled for his life. Later he discovered that he had been declared dead, and someone else had taken over his castle. There was only one thing to do: return to his homeland and catch a Gormack. When caught, a Gormack could be bargained with, but fate handed Lord Arkus a sparkling one who agreed to serve Arkus for 6 years. Arkus's life was about to change. Can this sparkling take a villain and change him into a hero, a good guy? It seemed to be working until he was found out by Prince Kellemar of Dalvanna. Would he return to being a villain or follow the advice of his sparkling and lean to the good side?

There are more twists and turns packed into this short story than a sack of pretzels. They will keep the reader wondering what is going to happen next. The characters are interesting, and it is easy to become connected with them. Though this book is written for youth, I feel any age will enjoy this story.
