Learning about animals is fun and sparks children’s imaginations in Cara Hyman's My Special Friend. The story is told from the perspective of an adorable little girl who has a rather unusual friend. He is pink, with purple squares and orange hair. They enjoy doing all kinds of things together, such as going to the park or reading books. On one occasion, they visit the zoo, where they spend an unforgettable day. While the girl keeps a safe distance, her friend interacts with the animals. He jumps very high with the kangaroos, bravely sits with the lions, swings with the monkeys, and more. In this way, they both learn about the animals’ characteristics and their environments as they explore the different areas of the zoo, including the reptile and insect sections.
I like Cara Hyman's writing style because she uses clear sentences, and her ideas are easy to follow. Everything is narrated using language designed to enrich the vocabulary of young readers, making reading engaging. The characters are lovely and live harmoniously. This makes their day full of adventures and unique experiences. I also loved that the particular characteristics of the animals are presented naturally without affecting the story. The illustrations by Amy Zhing are also charming, showing a wide variety of animals, colorful settings, and many funny situations. I found the book to be quite comprehensive. Finally, it includes a section with interesting facts about the animals in the story. My Special Friend is a fun story that encourages curiosity and learning.
