My Wingman by Tessa King is the story of Clover, who has just endured too much loss for one young woman. First her mother, before she even got a chance to meet her, and then her best friend, and now she’s slowly losing her grandmother, who means the world to her. At this point, it would be easy for her to let grief take over, but there are moments of light in her life that keep her moving forward, and those glimpses add depth to this story. Elliot is also a big part of this story and Clover’s life. Her best friend was taken from her too soon, and it’s that grief that weighs heaviest on Clover. They had a trip planned, so she went anyway to handle her sorrows healthily, and in the small town of Franklin, she truly began to heal.
Many elements of My Wingman make it such a delight to read. Of course, there’s the grief factor, which gives our heroine plenty of room to grow and a best friend, Reese, that every girl needs. Tessa King beautifully describes the small town of Franklin, from the bed-and-breakfast to the adorable café. The way Clover’s grief is painted is so vivid that it jumps off the page, helping the reader understand her better. She has a choice to make about her life, and it’s not an easy one. Should she let grief weigh her down, or start to live and love again?
