Named After Legends by Stevland Martin Malcolm Polite is exactly as the title describes. Following the life story of Stevland, a man named after various legends in the African-American community, we see his journey in not only living up to his name but finding himself and becoming his own hero. This inspirational tale spans Stevland's formative years into adulthood, through his college career, his travels, and ultimately his final chosen path in life. This book is truly an inspirational read from start to finish. I found the author's narrative voice to be very self-reflective and reading each chapter was like listening to the author tell me his story firsthand. I enjoyed how despite encountering several challenges in his life Stevland never lost his sense of optimism and faith which allowed him to overcome any hurdles in his path.
Named After Legends by Stevland Martin Malcolm Polite truly is a testament to how one's perspective in life can change the outcome of one's circumstances and that ultimately life is what one makes of it. The writing style and narrative were well done and made the transition between chapters seem effortless, never breaking the flow of the story despite there being jumps in timelines here and there. I can see this book being made into a film, with flashback scenes and all. Named After Legends holds true as Stevland seems to have become a legend in himself within this book. I enjoyed every minute of reading about his journey. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a bit of motivation or a change in perspective to help them overcome any struggles in life they may be facing.
