“Whoever said getting revenge doesn’t bring you peace was wrong.” Yet Nietzsche reminds us that revenge may come with a cost, and Nevada Lowball by Antonio Nicassio would make old Friedrich proud. Young Wes is a good man, an ex-combat vet now dealing cards at a Vegas casino, and married to Maggie. Their life is ideal, and while the two struggle to make ends meet, they are rich beyond comparison in happiness. Wesley also moonlights for Maggie's dad, doing carpentry work, along with James (Maggie's brother) and his friend Vinny. But when James and Vinny decide to rob a client, they unleash a series of events that threaten them all, forcing Wes to seek aid from his former platoon sergeant Sean and fellow soldier Caleb. Now, with the sides drawn up, they are all about to learn the folly of stealing from the wrong man.

If you enjoyed No Country For Old Men, you can stop reading this review and just get Nevada Lowball by Antonio Nicassio right now; it makes that title seem pedestrian in comparison. An intricate plot full of danger, action, and suspense creates non-stop immersion that saw me read this book in a single sitting. Underlying themes of friendship, camaraderie, love, and betrayal combined with a pace akin to an adrenaline rush on steroids resulted in an exemplary and thrilling tale of suspense. Yet it is also a compact, concise novel and an easy read. Character development is exquisite, and you will meet a microcosm of humanity through the people that populate this novel. In particular, Lee and Amber (the hit-team couple) were fascinating and made Anton Chigurh seem normal. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves thrillers, crime stories, and action adventures, without reservation.
