In Her First Hero by Leon Harris, the author meets Aisha, who works in a restaurant. Their connection is instant, and as time passes, they grow very close despite their age difference. Aisha gets pregnant, but the happiness doesn’t last long. Leon discovers Aisha has been lying and manipulating him emotionally to steal from him. They end up separating, leaving Leon to take care of Maddie alone. Maddie is only four years old when Aisha decides to just walk away. This causes a lot of pain to Maddie, who doesn’t understand why her mother doesn’t love her. Leon has to adapt to new roles that society doesn’t see as masculine roles. Playing with dolls and plaiting hair are some of the skills he learns. The challenges are numerous, but being a single dad is not about being perfect. It's about being there for your child as you navigate through life. Leon handles other challenges, such as dating and outdated views on men being the primary caregivers.

Her First Hero: A Single Dad's Guide to Raising a Strong Daughter by Leon Harris is wonderfully written, filled with honesty and vivid descriptions that make the work relatable and effective in passing on the intended message. Leon and Maddie's story is one of healing, growth, and unwavering love. I believe such literature is a step in the right direction in addressing the problems and biases faced by single dads. This thought-provoking work also got me thinking about the loopholes in the justice system and how the issue of deadbeat moms is often overlooked. The system needs to be changed to ensure fairness and avoid unintended harm to children. Leon also used easy-to-understand language, which makes the work accessible to all audiences. This is a good book, and I look forward to reading more by Leon Harris.
