K.A. Mulenga’s Never Give Up follows the Great Reds, an up-and-coming soccer team, who must prove victorious in their next two games against BFC to progress to the championship finals. Their team captain, James, is determined to make this happen. To their surprise, the first game leaves the Great Reds feeling despondent as they suffer an exhausting 3-0 defeat in their away game against BFC. The odds were not looking good for the team as they progressed into the next stage of the semi-finals, this time at their home stadium. James consistently reminds the team of their beloved team motto “Never give up!” and slowly but surely raises the spirits of his teammates. As the two semi-finalists approach the stadium for the decisive battle, we must ask if this inspiring reminder will be enough to secure their spot in the finals.
K.A. Mulenga’s Never Give Up is a motivational story suitable for children and adults alike. Although it is unlikely that someone over the age of 8 will choose this book for themselves, the story and message apply to all. The plot is intriguing, and I found myself excited to keep reading. The way Mulenga describes each goal and explains the football terminology is clear to those who are not familiar with the sport and is perfect for children. At first, I was slightly confused as to why the story was centered on a semi-final and not a final. The final game of a championship seems more important, but on reading the footnote at the end of the story I realized it was due to it being based on actual events, which I thought was just splendid. I also found the supporting illustrations perfect for the story and age range.
