Gerald McDaniel's latest suspense novel is entitled Night Sweats and Graffiti. It features attorney Daniel Saule (Sol), a man who appears to be caught in a vocational time warp. He practices in a high-powered firm and yet, he prefers low-profile cases. When a young woman is brutally murdered, Sol is intentionally drawn into the investigation which involves a suspect who is a member of the law firm. Sol is divorced but in a serious relationship with a younger woman and Sol's involvement in the murder investigation places him and his romantic partner at serious risk.
The plot is masterfully developed and Night Sweats and Graffiti skillfully weaves in the brilliance of Sol's mind coupled with his failings as a human being. He is a believable character, one worthy of respect and sympathy from readers. He seeks psychiatric counseling and then ends up counseling the counselor. He does this, not out of spite, but because of his various, unique intellectual talents. Sol has a dysfunctional son who meets the daughter of his romantic partner Liz. He has a dog named Miranda who is smarter than most people. All this blends in perfectly to facilitate a fascinating plot involving cult-like murder, dysfunctional interpersonal relationships, and a just plain good guy who desperately needs a break in life. I loved McDaniel's characterizations. He dug down deep and got the nitty-gritty of what makes the good and the bad tick. Most readers will not guess the ending and this speaks well for a suspense novel. Give it a read and you'll not regret picking it up.
