None the Wiser by Sterling Carmichael is an epic fantasy thriller that follows Kaimana, Laurenze, and their crew as they are lured out of retirement for a critical mission. In a world threatened by a powerful conspiracy, they face a nefarious adversary supplying advanced weaponry through a magical portal. As they untangle layers of deception, new enemies arise, including an investigator assembling bounty hunters to track them down. In a race against time, they must stop those who seek to play god before their world plunges into chaos. Carmichael has crafted a brilliant multi-layered plot with intricate conspiracies and shifting alliances, making for a captivating narrative filled with unexpected twists that offer a uniquely action-focused spin on traditional fantasy tales.
Combining elements of epic fantasy, crime fiction, and suspense, Sterling Carmichael creates a refreshing hybrid that appeals to fans across multiple genres. The diverse, seasoned characters enhance this with their incredible skill sets and surprising ingenuity in getting out of tight spots and solving the many puzzles of the plot in unique ways. I especially liked Kaimana’s sharp dialogue. The close narrative focus lets us see the world just as each character experiences it and piece together the elements of conspiracy and mystery in real time. The world of Arian is also vividly realized with atmospheric touches to enhance the mood of every scene, as well as finely crafted political intrigue, in-depth, logical magical systems, and exciting new threats looming from both above and below. Overall, None the Wiser is a fully realized immersive fantasy tale that I highly recommend.
