In North Western by Jordan Elizabeth, readers meet Adair, a woman living in Utica who has recently lost her husband. Shortly after his death, she decides to take her daughter, Edith, and return to her childhood home in the small village of North Western. Upon their arrival, Adair notices that the once lively stop along the stagecoach route now seems different. Her family’s inn, the Stanton House, feels emptier than she remembers, probably because her grandparents have passed on during the time she’s been away. Adair starts rebuilding her life, but Edith struggles to adapt to a world far from everything she knows and loves. As guests come and go from the inn, unsettling questions and a growing sense of unease begin to bubble to the surface. Adair can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t quite right. Will that feeling ever go away? Will Edith ever be able to adjust to her new life?

I really enjoyed reading North Western by Jordan Elizabeth. The writing felt very immersive. It was like I was right there with the characters. Adair stood out to me because she felt real—she’s trying to hold everything together while also dealing with grief and change, and that came through clearly. Her joy about going home brought to mind this Laura Ingalls Wilder quote: “Home is the nicest word there is.” I also felt sadness for her since Edith had such a difficult time being in the place she most loved. At its heart, this is a mystery, and that’s what kept me interested from beginning to end. I wanted to know how this suspenseful tale would end, and believe me, I definitely didn’t see it coming. Readers who enjoy historical fiction with a touch of intrigue and emotional depth will really like this one. I highly recommend it.
