Not Like The Others is a children’s concept picture book written by Jana Broecker. Look at all the foxes playing. Some are standing, walking, or sitting with their elegant bushy tails curled around them. Broecker accurately describes foxes and each of the different creatures featured in this book, giving the reader information on how they live, what they look like and many other interesting facts. Then she challenges the reader to find the one who’s not like the others. Broecker gives clues, but each picture poses challenges that will keep readers entertained and focused on finding the featured creature. She neatly ties in those stories with the fact that each of the kids reading this book is also not like the others. Each one is special, one-of-a-kind and treasured. At the end of her book, Broecker also includes Additional Activity Ideas using the featured animals’ names, a recognition exercise for the colors used in the book and a special challenge featuring ladybugs. She also gives a link to her site which allows readers access to 20 pages of mazes, coloring opportunities, and word searches.
Not Like The Others is not like most of the other children’s picture books out there. Each page educates as it informs, and then it challenges the reader to differentiate between animals that are very much alike -- even with her clues. On occasion, I found myself having to compare creatures several times before I found the special one. The pattern recognition exercises are marvelous, and the theme of the book works so very well. The illustrations are perfect, each panel presenting the reader with a new puzzle to figure out. I also liked how Broecker keeps the excitement happening even after the last page with the Additional Activities and her link to extra puzzles. This thought-provoking book, which celebrates the differences in all of us, is most highly recommended.
