One Life for Another by Greg Laird is a legal mystery in which Steve was going to represent a man found guilty of murder, and the success of his defense would decide the man's fate. Scottie Pinkerton was found guilty of killing his wife Ashley and was placed on Oklahoma's death row. Despite all the evidence, Steve instinctively felt that Scottie was innocent. Although Steve was sure he understood the legislation regarding the death penalty, he lacked investigative experience and needed assistance. Steve was assisted by Dr. Emily Babbage, a computer forensic investigator, and Harold Thomas, also known as Booger, the best investigator he could locate. The fact that Steve started getting death threats from an unidentified source made it clear that Scottie's life was not the only one at stake.

Greg Laird's One Life for Another unfolds the story of a desperate man on death row and his dedicated lawyer. This page-turner was fast-paced and hard to put down. I just had to know what would happen next. With all the plot twists and turns, it was impossible to predict who the killer was. The scenes were descriptive, and I felt I was part of Steve and his team’s investigation. It was a welcome change from the seriousness of Scottie’s last hope of being set free and Steve needing to find proof that Scottie is innocent. There is a unique cast of characters and more than enough suspects to be the murderer. This story had everything necessary for a fantastic legal thriller that kept me hooked from the start until the end.
