One Stormy Night (Her Journey Book 1) by Sofia Sawyer features Charlie Middleton’s career change. For three years, Charlie spent every moment of her day answering phone calls and emails, scheduling meetings, and doing everything else that Lachlan Hart required. About to resign, Charlie receives a devastating phone call. Her Aunt Violet had died. Charlie inherits a cottage on a Scottish island. She visits the island and attempts to clear her mind before she attends intensive training for a new career. Charlie learns a storm is approaching and she has to leave the island that afternoon. She is preparing to pack her things when she hears a voice calling her name. She turns and sees Lachlan coming towards her. She attempts to argue with him when he begs for her to keep her job but misses the last ferry. Now, Charlie and Lachlan are stuck weathering a massive hurricane in a house that may not survive the storm.

Sofia Sawyer excels in building tension between two people who feel attraction for each other. Charlie’s feelings of independence border on a feminist standpoint and she seems to unleash this attitude on Lachlan. Understandably, Lachlan has a lot of guilt. The danger of the storm that hits the island is palpable, and I felt anxiety as they worried about the cottage surviving the storm. The property manager, Kennedy, added to the suspense. Charlie and Kennedy had some type of spark and he appears to be the type of man that she prefers. I think if my boss took a transatlantic flight to get me to come back, I would take it as a major compliment. There is a major theme that I picked up from the storyline, which is that you should take the initiative because you will never know if you don’t try. Anyone who enjoys suspenseful romance stories with a side element of danger will like One Stormy Night.
