Gilgamesh, the mortal and divine hybrid king of Uruk, had achieved so much that his power had grown unchecked. Now he ruled the people of Uruk with an iron fist, and they constantly cried to the heavens about the suffering and oppression to which he was subjecting them. Answering the people of Uruk, the gods create Enkidu, an equal of Gilgamesh and born of the wild, to counter the king’s might. However, as Gilgamesh meets Enkidu, they form a bond of mutual respect and love. Together, they set out on conquests, taking on trials from the gods. It is not long before their actions anger the gods. This sparks a decision from the heavens that not only leaves Gilgamesh grieving, but he also embarks on a perilous journey, seeking the secret of eternal life. Will Gilgamesh find the answers he seeks? Find out in Alex Johnson’s The Warrior King.

Anchoring the plot in the ancient Mesopotamian legend of Gilgamesh, Johnson brings the scenes to life on the pages with colorful, evocative depictions. I was drawn into a realm of gods, monsters, spirits, heroes, and more. The philosophical depth of the storyline, alongside the riddles and layered conversations, provokes thought and reflection on the underlying themes of the story. These include mortality, friendship, loss, power, ambition, wisdom, personal growth, divinity, and fate, among others. The sentimental tone of the narration and the juxtaposition of the characters’ complex traits strengthened the story, making it easy to connect with them. Lovers of mythology and epic fantasy novels with a blend of adventure, action, and suspense will find Alex Johnson’s The Warrior King an enthralling read.
