Operation: BLACKFLAG by Richard J. Kendrick is a tongue in cheek kind of sci-fi fantasy/monster flick with an '80s vibe. You have the straightforward President of the United States with a teddy bear personality saved for his daughter, a college student who has the privilege of using the President’s Air Force One. You also have the strict and levelheaded general and his military personnel, eccentric scientists, a grumpy husband and wife living on a farm, and last but not least, a rich, Miami Vice kind of villain with a ludicrous name - “Reid Ransom; adventurer, playboy, founder and CEO of Ransom Research Corporation, venture capital wunderkind.” This ensemble is connected through fast paced subplots that gradually point to giant, mutated wasps.

There’s an accident in the lab of Ransom Research Corporation, and one of the wasps escapes, creating its own carnage in the outside world. This is my second read of Kendrick’s work, so the solid qualities of the narrative, prose and dialogue are expected. The propaganda-styled blurb is very ingenious. It is unconventional, over the top, and attention grabbing, complemented well by its cover art. That said, I did expect a lot of carnage and death, in other words, I had ‘giant’ expectations, but they led to smaller, perhaps slightly moderate scenes for a sci-fi horror fan like me. On the other hand, Operation: BLACKFLAG still offers some thrilling delights with its action scenes, and the characters are quite well drawn. On the whole, this a quick and fun read from Kendrick.
