Our Journey with Prostate Cancer: Empowering Strategies for Patients and Families by Judith Anne Desjardins LCSW BCD MSWAC is a useful book that serves as a guided meditation to all those battling prostate cancer. The book provides spiritual and medical insights and also the entire process of recovery to spiritual development in patients. The author's experience of handling her husband's prostate cancer and their emotional and psychological journey together while going through the treatment is very inspirational. Her insights into the dynamics of cancer, treatment and healing are comforting to readers who are around those going through this or the patients themselves.

The journal entries of the author have a lot of informative facts and also guide readers. The book is definitely helpful to all those who are going through this difficult phase in their lives. The meditations and tips for checking on one's spiritual and physical health are also very useful. The recommendations for cancer patients and their families who are experiencing anxiety and panic attacks are encouraging and supportive. Dealing with cancer can be stressful and tiring, and the book encourages those who are going through this traumatic phase to tap into the power of prayer. I liked the holistic approach to handling the disease which reiterates the power of hope, love and healing. The insights into physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being are not only powerful but also comforting.

Reader Views (Christine Watson)

“ Ms. Desjardins shares her thoughts, feelings and words with us through her journal writings and storytelling, capturing the attention of the reader from page one.. .. She provides a wealth of suggestions and tips for others on the same journey, including pre-operation ideas, lists of depression symptoms, self-care suggestions, and even how to be a warrior…

I am changed from reading this book and I know everyone who reads this book will find comfort and healing. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to be informed of the journey of cancer.”

Allbooks Review (Peter Klein)

“ The journey that takes place in this book is well worth the read even if you, your loved one, a family member or a friend don’t even have cancer of any kind….

All the suggestions mentioned in the book and the experiences movingly documented in journal entries apply to all of life’s difficulties…The suggestions are practical guides to living life to the fullest by carefully administering to the needs of body, minds, hearts and souls.

I highly recommend this book to everyone but especially those who are fighting the good fight in whatever battles life may throw your way.”

Przemyslaw Twardowski, M.D., Medical Oncologist, City of Hope

“What is unique about this book are the very specific recommendations on coping with cancer diagnosis, directed to patients, spouses, and healthcare providers. They involve diet, attitude, exercise, hints on how to deal with the ‘healthcare system.’

The book is very honest, talks about the ups and downs, setbacks, fears, frustrations, but ultimately, coping, faith and hope.

I recommend this book to cancer patients, their spouses and significant others, doctors and nurses involved in the care of cancer patients, social workers, and other healthcare providers.”

Jill Wilson, RN, MSc in Cognitive Behavior Psychotherapy, Hospice and NHS counselor and therapist, Lancashire, England

“This is a truly a personal account, written from the heart. It is both practical and educational, blended in an emotionally compelling journal format with well researched and informed recommendations for the mind, emotions, body and spirit of patients and their families.

The mixture of information, prayer, food, love, exercise, the thoughts/emotions/behaviors experienced, relaxation practices, all intertwined is what makes it for me. It gives hope!”

Shani Fox, ND, Healing and Hope for Cancer Survivors, a holistic medical practice.

“The message that patients are important members of their medical teams, and the discussions of dynamics between patients and immediate family members are very important and helpful, and has potential to alleviate a lot of suffering.”
