Our Song, Our Voice by Tuula Pere is a heartwarming story that follows Sisu, a little golden crow who belongs to a special flock of birds facing extinction. Their valley is under threat as machines knock down trees, destroying the birds' homes and food sources. As food becomes scarce, Sisu’s parents must fly far from their home to find something to eat, leaving Sisu in the care of his grandmother, Una. As they spend time together, Sisu and Una grow close, sharing stories and songs while bonding over memories of their ancestors. Una tells Sisu about the giant pines in the Blue Mountains, which contain a mysterious resin with life-saving properties. Concerned about his sick and weak grandmother's fate if they are forced to leave their home, Sisu embarks on an adventure to find medicine to cure her.
Our Song, Our Voice is a beautiful tale about preserving one’s heritage and the importance of family, resilience, and hope. It highlights the interconnectedness of nature and raises awareness about the need to protect our environment. The bond between Sisu and Una serves as a reminder of the strength of family ties and shared traditions. Unfortunately, many people, like Sisu's parents, forget the roots and heritage that shape their identity. Values such as respect, traditional medicine, and community are fading away. Tuula Pere's narrative encourages readers to reconnect with these teachings and honor the wisdom of the past. Her engaging storytelling is beautifully complemented by colorful landscape art by Muntasir Dipto, which captures the beauty of the valley. Overall, this is a fantastic book to add to your children's reading collection, as it teaches them to be brave, and compassionate, and become stewards of the environment and their family heritage.
