Author Biography

Bill and Glenda Clark wrote 98% of their memoir in the same style they did everything, each taking the lead in the part they did best. Glenda kept journals throughout life and wrote daily in her last 36 years. Bill, a meticulous note taker, accumulated a wealth of detail in his near-photographic mind. They began putting their story on paper in 2020, three years before Glenda died and four years before Bill. They spent hours each day traveling back through one of Glenda’s journals, Bill filling in details as he wrote their memories down so Glenda could type after deciphering his writing. Their son Jim was recruited, initially to edit the few typed pages that materialized every few days.

After mom died, dad immersed himself in their history, determined to finish what had become Our Story. Having almost no typing skills, he pecked away at the amazing clip of 11 wpm in his race to finish ‘the book’. My job description expanded to ‘computer troubleshooter’ on the weekly occasions when “all was lost”. The race went on for the 11 months dad lived alone (“for the first time in my life”) to a near finish. Dad apologetically handed it over for me to finish two days before he died.

The last two chapters were taken from my journals of the last year in each of their remarkable lives. The cover differentiates the Clark version of ‘Our Story’ from other versions by embodying their lifelong loves in a single image: basketball, Colorado, and each other.

Our Story by Bill Clark, Glenda Clark, and Jim Clark is a fascinating family chronicle that captures the intricate fabric of life from 1925 to 1946 through the lens of two intertwining familial narratives. In Life Before Bill and Life Before Glenda, readers witness the foundational moments that shape Bill's and Glenda's lives, rich with experiences that highlight resilience, devotion, and the essence of family bonds. But what is most captivating is the romance that started through childhood, and that will sustain the couple for eight decades. The story begins with Glenda's humble beginnings on a farm in Braceville, Ohio, where she grew up doing hard labor without the conveniences of modern life, assisting her father with daily tasks alongside the animals they raised. The familial connection runs deep, primarily through the trials faced—the illness and eventual loss of her mother, Ruby, and the tragic death of her half-brother, Glenn. Glenda’s strength is palpable, as is her enduring spirit, reflected in her determination to maintain the farm and adapt to the numerous hardships.

Bill’s journey is also brilliantly captured in this biography — from a warm childhood filled with familial love and camaraderie as he navigates challenges to a close-knit family and broader social changes to the impacts of World War II. Bill's path reveals his evolving character as a son, a student, and ultimately, a partner to Glenda. What makes Our Story unique is its detailed examination of daily life during a time of great adversity. The narrative offers vivid descriptions of rural farming life, social interactions, and the emotional upheavals amid the Great Depression and World War II. The bond between Bill and Glenda develops gradually, tempered by individual hardships and artistic expressions of youth as they navigate love amidst the trials of life. In synthesizing these experiences, Bill Clark et al. offer readers a story of personal growth and a tribute to familial love. Their journey from childhood into adulthood resonates with the universal challenges of growing up. The story is beautifully written, and readers will be fascinated by the depth of characterization, the ingenuity in capturing family dynamics, and more.
