Palisades by Lee Martin is a crime and investigation story set in the mountain town of Palisades, West Virginia; a town with an interesting history, great opportunities, yet fraught with crime and an uncertain economy. Palisades is witnessing a series of murders and Nate Davenport, the chief of police, is under pressure to find the killer before the problem escalates. Less than two months into his post, Nate has his own problems, coupled with his intense feelings for Lynette Echols, the Senior Deputy with whom he has to cooperate. The advent of State Investigator, Alicia Tanner, on the scene could have been good news, but she seems to be another challenge that Nate has to face. Who pulls the strings in a city where poverty cohabits with people who win a million in the lottery and become rich overnight? That is what Nate and his team have to find out and they have little time in which to do it.

This is a very interesting story, told in powerful prose and with beautiful, vivid descriptions. The story starts in the midst of action, a crime, and the reader immediately starts wondering why the victim has to be killed and if the perpetrators will be found and how. I enjoyed the pace and the different conflicts introduced throughout the plot. The characters are very complex and well developed, and readers will love Nate Davenport and his struggle to resolve his personal issues while working hard to solve multiple crimes. Lee Martin is a great writer. Palisades is a highly entertaining read.
