Kimberly Fish's Parade of Secrets is set in 1948 Longview, Texas, where former wartime spy Lane Hayes accepts a private assignment from industrialist R. G. LeTourneau after cryptic messages begin appearing across the aircraft inside his company hangar. The inquiry into vandalism changes when teenage caddie Peter “Pickles” Bramford is found strangled in the Lake Cherokee dam. Suspicion settles on pilot Tommy Usher, who recently attacked Peter after learning how he treated fifteen-year-old Darlene Morris before her death. Tommy is then killed in a plane crash, leaving Lane unconvinced by the explanation taking hold around town. Her search follows a trail from the hangar to the dam, where stolen tools connect Peter to the messages. Each discovery brings Lane closer to a crime concealed beneath Longview’s guarded loyalties for many years.
Kimberly Fish's Parade of Secrets is a murder mystery in a fascinating postwar Texas. Fish grounds the setting in details of Lane’s daily world. Her covert radio role at a Black voter rally introduces 1948 communications, while Lyndon B. Johnson’s campaign visit places the investigation inside the era’s public life. The author presents Lane as a woman whose wartime competence sits credibly within the limits placed on a married woman in 1948. Her guarded dealings with Tommy Usher display instinctive suspicion, while her professional respect for Deputy Marion Taylor recognizes another woman serving inside male institutions. Fish writes with polish and intelligent wit, and moves the investigation and the story forward at a spirited pace with a satisfying conclusion. Historical mystery readers who appreciate a nod to faith should put this on their list.
