Parisian Flaire is the concluding volume of Celeste Johnson’s Alternate Realms Trilogy, where the refined world of literary editing collides with the dark labyrinth of cyber espionage. We’re with former editor Adelaide as she is pulled into the enigmatic depths of vWorld, which is a covert digital network steeped in secrets and betrayals. Her once-ordered life begins to fracture in this dark new space. Meanwhile, Mia, caught between the elegance of Paris and the shadows of Venice, must confront the ghosts of the past while pursuing a fractured future. As identities blur and alliances crumble, both women must decide how far they’ll go to reclaim their stories, even as the line between real and virtual becomes dangerously thin.
Author Celeste Johnson has a way of telling stories that is urgent and gripping, and she offers us a genre-blending literary work that merges Parisian elegance with cyber-thriller high stakes in such unique ways. I’ve never read a story with this mix of influences before, and I’m amazed at how well they gel together for an intelligent, atmospheric mix that captures both inner turmoil and international intrigue. The closeness of the narrative on the characters keeps you entranced, and the well-structured dual female perspectives give complexity and emotional depth to the story. Mia’s story had a lot of espionage drama and all the European style elegance that I enjoy in these kinds of mysteries. Adelaide’s story was so sharp, gritty, and dangerous that in the end I couldn’t decide which I enjoyed more, and was utterly thrilled when the plots converged and it all made sense. Overall, I would certainly recommend Parisian Flaire as a satisfying and thought-provoking conclusion to a layered trilogy, and the trilogy in general to fans of deeply considered literary dramas with interesting speculative fiction twists.
