Paromita De’s Paromita: The Value in a Name tells the story of a little girl who has a really tough first day of third grade. Her new teacher gets her name completely wrong during roll call, making it sound like a clunking car engine, and the whole class cracks up. Embarrassed and wanting to avoid more teasing, Paromita decides to go by Pat instead. But that backfires when classmates like Jennifer and Damien just use it as an excuse to come up with meaner nicknames. As the school talent show approaches, Paromita must choose between changing who she is to blend in and holding onto the Kathak dancing (and heritage) her grandmother passed down. It is hard when school feels so unwelcoming. Will Paromita find her courage when it comes time to take the stage?

Paromita: The Value in a Name by Paromita De is a compelling children’s picture book that gets to the heart of what it feels like to stand out when you just want to fit in. The way the story captures family bonds and cultural pride feels very heartwarming and sweet. Abdullah’s gorgeous artwork really brings everything to life, especially with the soft lighting in the classroom scenes and the amazing details of the traditional clothing and little Diwali oil lamps. You can really feel Paromita’s emotions change as she goes from feeling lonely to sharing her culture with the class. It is also wonderful to watch how a new classmate steps in to support her later on, showing the importance of having caring friends in your support circle. Young readers will finish this book feeling proud of who they are and their incredible family history.
