Phennius Knoward High School located in Orange County, California, was named after a World War I soldier who was running away from battle when he accidentally fell on an explosives plunger and detonated a charge that blew up a German machine gun nest. Yes, Knoward was executed for fleeing, but he also received the Medal of Honor. Author Samuel Blessing has written a totally hilarious book "Passport to Nowhere" which describes Ridgemont High School in such a way that it looks like Harvard. Kelly King, the principal, is tough and foul-mouthed and runs as tight a ship as she can. Liz Gleem, the science department head, is a bully and "should have been born a boy so that she could beat people up for their lunch money in elementary school. Sandy Cooper is Liz's lackey with "half the brains and ten times the mouth." Roy Blump is on his way to the top job after Kelly retires (God help us!). Jethro is the school janitor who drinks vodka from his thermos. The question is, can good guys Bob McCloud, Lenny Lake, Frank Bottoms and Rich Gillette win against this crew?
"Passport to Nowhere" will have readers laughing out loud while they hope no family members ever encounter a school like Knoward High. Kelly, Liz, Sandy, Roy, Jethro, Quentin Harris and even Mac, Frank, Lenny, and Rich are fun caricatures of people the author has encountered in his years of teaching. There are many dedicated teachers who are doing a terrific job making a difference in young lives everywhere, but "Passport to Nowhere" reminds readers that there are people in schools who do not belong there. "Passport to Nowhere" will thrill readers everywhere.
