Author Biography

Diane and her husband, Rick, have served in youth and adult ministries in their church, where she wrote plays and skits as well as Sunday School curriculum and Bible studies. She has three children and eight grandchildren who are the crown of her life. Diane is President of Ozarks Writers League, and a member of the Columbia Chapter of the Missouri Writers Guild. She penned the inspiring story of her mother, Clella, believing it might encourage readers to conquer their circumstances and realize each path chosen affects everyone around them. From the many buckets of water Clella carried uphill from the spring to her second chance at love, Pathways of the Heart is a little bit of Little House on the Prairie meets the Bridges of Madison County. It is set in the Missouri Ozarks from the Great Depression into the early fifties, and only twelve miles from the home of Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder, where Clella’s children visited on field trips to hear the famous, older author read.

Pathways of the Heart by Diane Yates is a purpose-driven story, a gripping tale that follows a woman’s bravery through a difficult marriage to raise her six children alone through the years of the Depression. It is an inspiring story of love, betrayal, and courage. When Clella accepted to marry Kenneth, she believed it would be a happily-ever-after experience for them, but after traversing the period of the Great Depression, she becomes restless. Her husband is far away and she is left alone to raise their six children. But things suddenly change with an unplanned encounter. Can Clella risk everything to love a second time?

Diane Yates’ memoir tells the true and inspiring story of her mother, unveiling powerful spiritual lessons for readers, and the subtleties of the human heart. I enjoyed the biblical references she offers at the start of each chapter. The narrative is so well done that readers will find it very delightful reading from chapter to chapter. The short chapters are ideal for this book and they are well-crafted to literally push the reader forward into the story. I loved the enticing prose, crisp and well-done; the dialogues are well-written and focused, crafted to read so naturally. The author handles the conflict brilliantly, and even though this is a memoir, it reads like a well-crafted fictional narrative. This is a story that is filled with many insightful passages, loaded with lessons on love, faith, and sacrifice. Pathways of the Heart is the kind of book that completely engages readers and compels them to sympathize with the protagonist. I loved every bit of it.

I have the utmost respect for both the author, Diane Yates, and her mother, Clella. Throughout the reading of Pathways of the Heart, I kept putting myself in her shoes: the living without electricity, running water, even a bathroom; not being loved or appreciated; being abandoned and neglected; having to raise six children on her own. What determination, faith and strength she had to have to survive for both herself and her children. Diane has done a remarkable job of putting into words her mother’s life; one we should learn from. Much praise! Must read!

A refreshingly honest story of one woman's struggles and redemption. I laughed and cried as I read Clella's story. Some passages reminded me of women I've known, and I could see myself in other passages.

I read this book the first time when I received it from a friend. After Diane came out with her second book, All That Matters, the continuing story of her mother's life i wanted to read it again to refresh my memory. The story of the strength and courage that her mother had to have to survive and to go on with life was remarkable.

A heart wrenching, deeply personal story of love, healing, honoring ones roots and rising up to find a home within ones self. A testament to the extraordinary strength of the human spirit
