Patriot: A Brooke Kinley Adventure is an action and adventure thriller written by A.S. Bond. Brooke's been given a tip by her friend, Scott Jensen, a deputy director at the Department of Defense, that a recent Taliban attack in the Middle East was conducted using highly advanced weaponry. The government's scientists were able to identify a chip in the retrieved weapon, which had originally been manufactured for use in mining operations. The technology behind the chip has been linked to Jean Maynard, an industrialist whose only mine holdings are located up in the Northern Labrador province. Brooke decides to do some first-hand investigating and sets out for Canada, armed with camping gear, a SatNav phone and a canoe.
A.S. Bond's terrorist thriller, Patriot: A Brooke Kinley Adventure, is exciting, intelligent and fast-paced. This is a complex thriller that takes place on two very different levels: Scott's world of government bureaucracy and intrigue and the icy wilderness of Northern Canada. While I was originally attracted to this book because of the adventure aspect, I soon found myself also drawn into the complexities of Scott's world. Brooke is a marvelous character; she's intelligent, independent and at home in the wilds. The abilities of Dex, the astrophysicist she rescues from a sinking plane, perfectly complement Brooke's own as the two ride rapids, cope with a grouchy bear, navigate miles of mine tunnels and try to stop a major terrorist attack. Patriot is savvy and smart and a lot of fun, and it's a cut above the average run-of-the-mill terrorist thriller. It's highly recommended.
