Patriot's Pride by Penelope Marzec is the story of Margaret and Derrick. Each has a different view on God, how to treat various wounds and illnesses, and they are from very different backgrounds, but when things go wrong they find they can count on each other and that they do love each other. Margaret is a woman from a small town, who grew up no stranger to hard work, and runs a successful baking business. She finds herself on a ship bound for England for the reading of her late grandfather's will. Derrick is a surgeon who fought in the Civil War and, after losing his brother to sepsis, makes it his mission to travel to England to study with the famed John Hunter. Derrick and Margaret meet on the ship bound for England and, while they have several disagreements and Derrick insults Margaret's intelligence a few times, they come to an understanding and complete the voyage. Unfortunately the same trouble that finds them at sea in the form of an English ship follows Margaret and leads to Derrick coming to her rescue yet again.
Patriot's Pride by Penelope Marzec is the pretty typical love story of two people from different worlds that come together in the end and make a beautiful life together, but Patriot's Pride stands out as there are plot twists that are hard to see coming. With a blend of spirituality mixed with science, Penelope Marzec weaves Margaret and Derrick's stories together to make a wonderful tale that feels like it could step off the pages into reality. A unique story.
