Perseverance: One Woman's Journey From Ghana to the United Nations and Beyond by Emelia Timpo is a well-written and truly inspiring memoir that recounts the events in her life. She gives a detailed account of her childhood growing up in a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti region of Ghana. During her education, particularly at Wesley Girls High School, she actively participated in extracurricular activities, including the Red Cross and Girl Scouts, and voluntary work camp groups. These experiences broadened her perspective on the world and exposed her to the level of poverty prevalent in the villages surrounding her school. Timpo further writes about her career journey from being a teacher during her National Service year in Winneba to the FAO and other UN organizations. This book testifies to her hard work, humility, and persistence.
I loved so much about this book. The title is just perfect for Emelia Timpo’s story. I appreciated that her story did not solely highlight the positive aspects of her life. She shared some significant challenges she faced as a Ghanaian-American. This book features some historical facts that I found fascinating, particularly Elmina Castle, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I also loved that this memoir had an excellent pace and every chapter connected logically. The author’s writing is engaging, well-organized, exceptionally detailed, and easy to comprehend. I loved the pictures incorporated into the narrative, as these added to the authenticity of the story. I recommend Perseverance by Emelia Timpo to all lovers of memoirs and inspiring non-fiction books.
