The Throne of Deep Roots is the second book in the Worldhold epic fantasy series by Morven T.H. Borthwick. One year after the Black Sea rose and nearly destroyed the lands of the Worldhold, the Lord of the Dovarim, Sathor, and his council are still seeking someone to blame. They settle on the girl, Elia, who is rumored to speak to the animals and wild creatures. She escapes, but Sathor’s wife is blamed for warning her. Eron and Boundhand Belor are also fugitives from the judgment in Dovaryel, seeking and finding help in the mountains and forests. The story unfolds at multiple levels, as personal quests and powers intersect with larger events and ancient, hidden powers. With the return of the Dravessë to their own lands, under the leadership of Elia and the fugitives, Sathor and his allies move against them, and war is kindled after a long time.
The Throne of Deep Roots has a deeply ethical worldview underlying the dramatic storyline. Fans of epic world-building will appreciate the detailed and compelling descriptions of the new lands introduced in the book. Morven T.H. Borthwick is just as gifted in creating characters of mythic stature who are still somehow reachable. The writing is formal, archaic, and well suited to the story. I especially liked the vivid and profound depiction of the sentient creatures and trees. Like the best myths, the story holds a mirror up to our own world and ourselves, giving back clarity and understanding. The story can be read by itself and as part of an unfolding saga. Highly recommended.
